Turk threatens to call Immigration when she doesn't co-operate and Rooster gives her his card. They go to a bar to speak to a Russian woman, one of the dead pimp's hookers. Turk hints at a lot of sex with "you know who" and a low sperm count. The two partners continue to discuss the case back in the office. She refers to Fisk's partner as "Rooster". Karen is in NYPD uniform and gloves gathering physical evidence as a CSI. They joke about the dead man's name Bobby Brady and the 1970s TV show The Brady Bunch. The card has a short poem justifying the killing. The police mobilize at the crime scene and the two partners kneel over the body. The skateboarder is shot in the chest and the handgun and small white note with writing on it are tossed on the street. Turk/Fisk's b&w video plays as he states Rambo the pimp was his 10th victim. A skateboarder is shown forcing a prostitute into a cab. She offers some to Turk who then flashes his badge. She lays down some cocaine and proceeds to snort it, mentioning Spider provided it. Turk goes to the men's washroom and is peeing at a urinal when an attractive young woman comes in and starts chatting. They enter the club and talk about how the converted bank is used for money laundering. The two cops are sitting in a car outside a lively dance club "404" in Harlem, discussing the owner Marcus Smith aka Spider, a man with known criminal activities. Turk/Fisk's narration continues as he says things heated up a couple of weeks ago. Then Fisk is seen shirtless on a bed and the woman calls him "Turk", telling him "not bad" but teasing him for how weakly he pulled her hair as she dresses. There is sounds of a struggle and a woman moaning. Suddenly a man's arm comes out, clasps her mouth and pulls her offscreen. She picks up her mail and we see her name "Karen Corelli". Train station and walking to her apartment. The partners are shown sitting in a church and Fisk narrates that he "lost his faith". The two cops are shown hiding the gun under a sofa cushion and then Randall is shown being taken away in cuffs, "lost his freedom for a crime he didn't commit" says Fisk. Fisk takes a handgun from an evidence box and his partner realizes what he is doing and tries to convince him otherwise, telling him he is his role model. Fisk's partner the chess player gazes at a passing priest and group of choirboys. His narration continues saying it all started about four years ago with the case of Charles Randall who murdered his girlfriend's daughter but was acquitted and released. He says he is David Fisk, Detective 1st Grade of the NYPD for nearly 30 years and he has killed 14 people. A grainy black and white video of one of the men starts. The other is a chess player who speaks of a former grandmaster going paranoid and crazy. There is a clip of one man shown to be a combative rec softball league manager. ![]() The credits begin with scenes of two men firing handguns and automatic weapons at a shooting range. ![]()

We can only imagine that Lovey is trying to get boys down for a nap in the bedroom with the windows open above. Following this guesswork, we will assume that Fabius is the man standing next to the woman on the north side of the porch and William Riley Austin is the man to his right. So, since we can see the waist of the woman on the north porch, we will assume that that was Fabius’s wife – Frances Emma Simpson – and not an 8-month pregnant Lovey Austin. On the day of Herbert Bamber’s visit Austin’s wife Lovey was actually eight months pregnant with their first daughter. William Riley Austin already had three young sons. (We have been working diligently on bios for our keepers – more on that soon we hope!) By 1893 Fabius was married, although had no children yet. On the day of the photograph (June 12), 1 st assistant keeper Fabius Simpson had been at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse for eight years. ![]() Because the photo gets blurry when we magnify it, we had to do a little sleuthing to determine which keeper on the north side was which. Remember that our little keeper’s house was brought over on a barge in 1920 so before that point, three keepers shared the duplex – the principal keeper lived on the south side and the assistants together on the north. The two assistant keepers were living together with their families on the north side of the keepers’ duplex. He and his wife, Ida, had four children at this point. At the time of the photo, he was 31 and had lived at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse for five years. The keeper on the right in the photo is Principal Keeper Hinnant. Thanks to this man, Herbert Bamber, who had come from surveying Bodie Island and Hatteras Lighthouses in the days prior, we have photographs of our then-keepers and their families: Lazarus Hinnant, Fabius Simpson, and William Riley Austin. In June 1893, a “government surveyor,” as the lighthouse keeper called him in his journal notes that month, arrived to survey the Currituck Beach Light Station in his capacity as assistant engineer for the U.S. Prefer to learn about this with a video? Because of the lighthouse's status as a hotel, keepers are required to cook meals and do laundry for the guests, and must carry a boating license in order to make supply runs, all in addition to the endless maintenance required by a lighthouse.Above, the notable 1893 photograph, taken by Herbert Bamber on JWhat’s in a Photograph? The salary offered was $130,000 - a better deal than the Canadian civil service, although it was to be split between two keepers. A 2019 article in the Guardian reports that the East Brother Light Station in San Francisco Bay was made into a bed and breakfast, and that it advertised for a lighthouse keeper who would also act as a hotel manager. However, with many lighthouses being converted into hotels, there's a possibility that being a lighthouse keeper could be a little more lucrative. A 2018 Financial Post article says that salaries in Canada range from $38,979 to $52,304, which isn't exactly a king's ransom - though you're getting a place to stay and the basic necessities included, which can keep your cost of living down. Well, as former lighthouse keeper Caroline Woodward reports, lighthouse keepers in Canada are the lowest-paid federal civil servants in the government. ![]() 11/9/2023 0 Comments Roasting acorn squash for soup![]() It is a meal to be savored, not hurried.įeed your soul and your body at the same time with a bowl of Roasted Acorn Squash Soup. Instantly you feel cared for and soothed, the rough edges of your day softened. Think of sitting down to a bowl of steaming soup. Two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar add a touch of brightness. I like a tiny bit of acid to cut through the vegetal flavor. Add ½ cup of heavy cream to up the creaminess factor. The soup should be without lumps and beautifully smooth. Combine everything in a stockpot over medium heat. Since there are a lot of vegetables, I puree them in two batches. Now everything is pureed together with chicken stock. I run a knife under the flesh to easily remove it. Once the vegetables are out of the oven, remove the squash from the peel. The cozy Fall flavors of this Roasted Acorn Squash Soup will have you saying, move over butternut squash, there’s a new Fall soup squash in town Both gluten-free and dairy-free, all foodies can embrace the sweater weather while warming up with a bowl of this nutritious and comforting soup. All of the vegetables should be finished at the same time, browned and tender. These roast for approximately 50 minutes. It may take 1 - 1 ¼ hours to roast the squash.Īfter the squash has been in the oven for about 25 minutes, add a second sheet pan that is full of quartered and seeded plum tomatoes, large diced onion, and cored chunks of Fuji apples. I like to cut it into 8 small pieces, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper, and place on a sheet pan. Roast your vegetables for about 20-25 minutes or until they start to brown a little and are soft all the way though. Also, it is just easier to cut a smaller squash. Add your cut and cleaned carrots (not the green tops) and cut and halved acorn squash to a sheet pan and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. First of all, smaller pieces will become tender faster. Do yourself a favor - pick the smaller squash. And the Fuji apples have a lovely honey-like sweetness.Īll of these flavors mingle into a fall vegetable soup that is soothing and satisfying. Plum tomatoes contribute their meaty texture and acid. While the taste of acorn squash is predominant in this creamy fall soup, the addition of other roasted vegetables magnifies the flavor profile. Roasting enhances its earthy sweetness, adding caramel notes that intensify the soup's flavor. The mild flavor of the vegetable lends itself to so many flavor combinations. Known as one of many winter squashes, this is the season of acorn squash. Squash is so versatile and makes an incredibly smooth and creamy soup. The inclination is to use sweater weather as a descriptor for fall. Serve warm with a few slices of persimmon, a handful of pomegranate seeds and a grating of fresh nutmeg. The temptation is there, go for the easy trope. If the soup looks too thick add a little extra stock or water to thin it out. Taste for seasoning adding more salt if needed. Remove the bay leaf and using an immersion blender, or tabletop blender, puree the soup until smooth. Cook for 45 minutes stirring occasionally. Next add in the stock, curry powder, cumin and a large pinch of salt and a little pepper. ![]() If it doesn't, that means the squash isn't cooked enough but don't worry it'll continue to cook in the soup. If the squash is cooked properly the skin will easily peel away. Once the squash is cool enough to handle scoop out the flesh and place in the pot. Next add in the garlic, a sprinkling of salt and bay leaf. Add in the onions and sweat for 5 minutes. In a large Dutch oven or stock pot bring 2-3 tbsp. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before handling. Roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until fork tender and golden brown. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place the halves on a baking sheet cut side up. With a large, sharp knife cut the acorn squash in half and scoop out the seeds. ![]() 11/9/2023 0 Comments Last of us 90000 parts at level 1![]() Head over to our The Last Of Us Part 1 Walkthrough hub for more help with the rest of the game. 11/8/2023 0 Comments Negative feedback loop homeostasis![]() ![]() In contrast to ectotherms, which rely on external temperatures to set their body temperatures, poikilotherms are animals with constantly varying internal temperatures. This group has been called cold-blooded, but the term may not apply to an animal in the desert with a very warm body temperature. ![]() Animals that do not control their body temperature are ectotherms. Another example of acclimatization is animals that have seasonal changes in their coats: a heavier coat in the winter ensures adequate heat retention, and a light coat in summer assists in keeping body temperature from rising to harmful levels.Īnimals can be divided into two groups: some maintain a constant body temperature in the face of differing environmental temperatures, while others have a body temperature that is the same as their environment and thus varies with the environment. In order to adjust to the lower oxygen levels at the new altitude, the body increases the number of red blood cells circulating in the blood to ensure adequate oxygen delivery to the tissues. This occurs, for instance, when an animal migrates to a higher altitude than it is accustomed to. This is called a process of alteration of the set point in a feedback loop.Ĭhanges can be made in a group of body organ systems in order to maintain a set point in another system. Medication can lower blood pressure and lower the set point in the system to a more healthy level. The result is the maintenance of an elevated blood pressure that can have harmful effects on the body. The body no longer recognizes the elevation as abnormal and no attempt is made to return to the lower set point. An example of this is blood pressure: over time, the normal or set point for blood pressure can increase as a result of continued increases in blood pressure. ![]() When this happens, the feedback loop works to maintain the new setting. It is possible to adjust a system’s set point. (credit: modification of work by Jon Sullivan) Blood sugar levels are controlled by a negative feedback loop. Negative feedback loops are the predominant mechanism used in homeostasis. The effects of PTH are to raise blood levels of the element. If calcium levels decrease, specialized cells in the parathyroid gland sense this and release parathyroid hormone (PTH), causing an increased absorption of calcium through the intestines and kidneys and, possibly, the breakdown of bone in order to liberate calcium. This is still a negative feedback loop, but not in the direction expected by the use of the term “negative.” Another example of an increase as a result of the feedback loop is the control of blood calcium. ![]() However, if an animal has not eaten and blood glucose levels decrease, this is sensed in another group of cells in the pancreas, and the hormone glucagon is released causing glucose levels to increase. Insulin causes blood glucose levels to decrease, as would be expected in a negative feedback system, as illustrated in Figure 14.20. Specialized cells in the pancreas sense this, and the hormone insulin is released by the endocrine system. When an animal has eaten, blood glucose levels rise. An example is animal maintenance of blood glucose levels. In other words, if a level is too high, the body does something to bring it down, and conversely, if a level is too low, the body does something to make it go up. It may either increase or decrease the stimulus, but the stimulus is not allowed to continue as it did before the receptor sensed it. Any homeostatic process that changes the direction of the stimulus is a negative feedback loop. ![]() |
